On the afternoon of October 30th, 2025, the 76th academic lecture of the “Zhongnan Cultural Translation Forum”, jointly organized by the Research Office of Xi’an Fanyi University, English School, and the Xi’an Translation Association, was successfully held. The lecture featured Professor Huang Libo, Vice President of Xi’an International Studies University, Dean of the Institute of Foreign Languages and Literature, and doctoral supervisor, as the keynote speaker. The topic of his presentation was “A Comparative Analysis of Operational Norms in Translating Du Fu's Poetry into and from Chinese: A Corpus-Based Investigation”. With profound academic expertise, Professor Huang delivered an academic feast of theoretical depth and practical value to the attending faculty, drawing on his solid academic foundation and extensive research experience.
During the lecture, Professor Huang systematically compared the textual differences between the “translating into” and “translating from” Chinese directions of Du Fu’s poetry, based on a parallel corpus of Du Fu’s poems in Chinese and English. He focused on analyzing the specific manifestations of operational norms in these two types of translated texts. Utilizing Gideon Toury’s theory of translation norms, Professor Huang provided an in-depth explanation of the different strategies and behavioral patterns followed by translators in the processes of translating into and from Chinese. The research revealed significant differences between the two types of translated texts in terms of linguistic structure, cultural information transmission, and stylistic representation. These differences are not only closely related to the translators’ translation philosophies and adopted perspectives, but are also deeply influenced by the translation norms they follow. Professor Huang emphasized that a thorough understanding of these normative differences can contribute to the synergistic development of both the practice and theory of translating classical Chinese poetry into English, while also providing valuable insights for the international dissemination and global communication of China’s excellent traditional culture.
The lecture attracted numerous faculty from English School, creating a vibrant academic atmosphere. During the interactive session, the attendees engaged in in-depth discussions with Professor Huang on topics such as corpus construction and the application of translation norm theory. These exchanges further deepened the understanding of Du Fu’s poetry translation, bringing new inspiration to the fields of academic research and cultural communication.
