Co-hosted by Shaanxi Provincial Translators Association, Peking University China Edgar Snow Research Center, Southern Utah University (USA), Northwestern University and Helen Foster Snow Foundation, organized by School of Foreign Languages, Northwestern University, Shaanxi Province, the 10th “Helen Snow Translation Award” competition co-organized by the Snow Research Center and the Institute of Regional Studies and Translation of Northwest University was launched at Northwestern University.
Liang Yuying, a student from the School of Advanced Translation of Xi’an Fanyi University (XFU), won the third prize in the Chinese-to-English translation in the final. Li Ruichao, the instructor, won the Outstanding Instructor Award, and the University was awarded the Outstanding Organizational Unit Award. Yuan Xiaolu, vice president of the Shaanxi Translators Association and dean of the School of Advanced Translation and School of English at XFU, was invited to attend the award ceremony on June 24.
The competition attracted students from more than 20 colleges and universities, including Xi'an Jiaotong University, Northwest University, Shaanxi Normal University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Xi’an International Studies University, and Beijing University of Chemical Technology. After receiving the notice of the competition, the School of Advanced Translation actively mobilized and organized teachers and students to participate in the competition. During the half-year preparation, Liang Yuying, under the careful guidance of the instructor Li Ruichao, prepared for the competition with all her strength, successfully passed the selection of the preliminary competition and the semi-final competition, and finally made a good achievement.
The Helen Snow Translation Award Competition is named after international friend Helen Foster Snow. It is an international translation competition jointly organized by China and the United States for college students. The purpose of the competition is to encourage contemporary college students to carry forward Snow’s spirit and tell Chinese stories well in foreign languages, to cultivate young translation talents for my country’s international communication, and to build a bridge of understanding and friendship between China and foreign countries in the new era. The competition provides foreign language students with opportunities to practice their translation skills and study and exchange in the United States, and helps cultivate foreign language professionals in colleges and universities.
The School of Advanced Translation has always comprehensively guaranteed the implementation of teaching reforms from the aspects of rationally formulating talent training programs, establishing a “double-qualified” teaching team, and building a platform for internal competitions. This competition is a successful exploration of the college’s adherence to the teaching mode of “promoting learning through competition, promoting teaching through competition, and combining learning with competition”. It has improved the quality of talent training and achieved the good effect of “promoting learning through competition”.
