In order to implement the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress and the “student-centered” educational philosophy, and strengthen the exchanges of experiences and innovative measures, the 10th National Seminar on Innovation in Student Work in Private Colleges and Universities sponsored by the National Joint Association of Student Counselors in Private Colleges and Universities was solemnly held in Wuhan from May 11 to 13. More than 300 student counselors from nearly 100 private colleges and universities across the country were present at the meeting. On behalf of Xi’an Fanyi University, Jiang Xiaojun, Deputy Dean of the School of Translation Studies (STS), and counselor representatives Chen Xiaonan and Wei Jing attended this meeting.
The meeting focused on the new thinking model of student work in private colleges and universities in the post-epidemic period, and through actual cases, the meeting explored the new ways, educational experiences and future directions of student work in private colleges and universities in the new era. In the meeting, numerous experts and scholars shared their insights in this regard. Xue Eryong, Deputy Dean of the China Education Policy Research Institute of Beijing Normal University and a top-notch National Youth Talent, delivered a report entitled “Establish a Broad Concept of Education, Promote the National Rejuvenation through Science and Education and Build a Powerful Nation of Education”. Zhang Zhenzhan, Secretary-general of the School Planning and Construction Development Center of the Ministry of Education, Secretary-General of the Curriculum Construction Collaborative Innovation Center, and Chairman of the National Joint Association of Student Counselors in Private Colleges and Universities, shared his thoughts on “The Field Logic of Future Learning Space”. He said that in the future, great changes would take place in schools. The way of learning would change from “learning for application” to “learning for studies”; the learning environment would change from “educational factory” to “learning community”, which features integration and flexibility. Li Bincheng, Vice President of Wuhan University of Bioengineering, gave a report on all-round education environment empowering students’ growth. This seminar took various forms, including expert reports, innovation reports, counselors experience sharing, director forums, exemplary reports, round-table forums, lightning talks, awarding ceremonies, etc., covering a wide range of aspects, such as the experiences of moral education, the effective ways of counselor’s professional development, the ways of community-based one-stop management and the innovation of college student work during the epidemic period.
Jiang Xiaojun was invited to give a report on innovating the management of moral education in five perspectives and the outcomes. From the perspectives of strength, height, warmth, breadth and depth, Professor Jiang introduced the exploration in management innovation and the effectiveness of moral education of STS. He proposed that in order to strengthen the student work in private colleges and universities, we should optimize the team of student counselors to enhance the strength of education, put students at the first place to make them feel warmth and care, and analyze the current problems of student counselors and develop an appropriate mechanism through guiding student counselors to enjoy their work and keep improving working methods. The report was well received by the participants. Recommended by various colleges and universities and evaluated by experts organized by the joint association, Chen Xiaonan’s report on the exploration and practice of integrating value education and major learning won the second prize.
STS will take this seminar as an opportunity and continue to adopt student-centered approach in student work. We will constantly improve the ability of student counselors, further explore new ideas and new measures of student work and actively build a unique brand in this regard so as to improve the ability in student education and make greater contributions to the development of the national first-class major construction.
