On the afternoon of March 1, 2023, Lecture 18 of “Zhongnan Culture Translation Forum” Lecture Series, entitled “Trans-civilization Imaginations and Translation”, was held by the School of Translation Studies in Classroom 2401 on the west campus of Xi’an Fanyi university. This lecture was given by Tong Ming, distinguished professor of Xi’an Fanyi university, and was hosted by Yuan Xiaolu, dean of the School of Translation Studies. Teachers and students from the School of Translation Studies attended the event.

Professor Tong Ming discussed the coexistence of opposite propositions in translation theory. He believes that humanities education should be a part of translation teaching, and flexible language ability comes from the understanding of “human condition” and humanities education. He also analyzed the difference between trans-civilization and cross-culture, the content of translation theory research, and the relationship between language and culture. In the lecture, Professor Tong Ming explored representative translation practice cases, showing various dimensions that need to be considered in translation.

Through this lecture, the teachers and students learned about the influence of trans-civilizations in translation, and gained a deeper understanding of translation teaching, theory and practice. The lecture inspires the teachers to continue to carry out Zhongnan Culture research and related academic exchange activities so as to promote the construction of the school’s characteristic majors and contribute to the construction of the national first-class translation major.
