On the afternoon of April 12, 2023, Professor Tian Hailong from Tianjin Foreign Studies University was invited to give a lecture entitled “Discourse and Translation Studies” in the multifunctional lecture hall on the west campus. The lecture was hosted by Yuan Xiaolu, dean of the School of English Literature & Culture and the School of Translation Studies. Li Yan and Li Xianhua, associate deans of the School of English Literature & Culture, Zhang Rui, associate dean of the School of Translation Studies, as well as teachers from the two schools attended the lecture.

Professor Tian Hailong, by analyzing translation cases, introduced the concept of “discourse” and the study of language in the post-modern perspective: critical discourse analysis. He pointed out that translation was not a pure conversion of information between texts, but a complex product manipulated by the discourse of power. He discussed Fairclough’s and Wodak’s research path of critical discourse analysis, pointed out the shortcomings of the existing path, and put forward an analytical framework that includes a “three dimensions—two directions” analytical model and a “two layers—five steps” analytical framework. By discussing theories, principles and research methods of critical discourse analysis, the lecture explored the combination of critical discourse analysis and translation research, and put forward the idea of enriching translation research from the perspective of critical discourse analysis.

Professor Tian Hailong explained social and disciplinary motivations for integration of discourse and translation studies, and showed an approach to promoting interdisciplinary research in the context of new liberal arts, i.e., pursuing integration of disciplines and emphasizing problem-based research.

In the concluding remarks, professor Yuan Xiaolu pointed out that: Professor Tian Hailong provided the audience with integration of linguistics and critical discourse analysis. In the lecture, translation cases were analyzed to explain related theories so that the audience better understood how to study translation from the perspective of discourse analysis, which was a new research area..

The lecture focused on text analysis, discourse analysis and functional discourse research, and provided new translation research areas for teachers and students from the two schools, promoted the role of translation research in feeding foreign language teaching, and played a positive role in the construction of national first-class majors.

现任中国语言学会社会语言学分会名誉会长、中国英汉语比较研究会话语研究专业委员会副会长兼秘书长。中国石油大学（北京）特聘教授、山东师范大学合作教授，兼任国际学术期刊Journal of Language and Politics，Journal of Sociolinguistics编委，系列丛书《南开话语研究》总主编，辑刊《话语研究论丛》《中国社会语言学》主编。研究领域为社会语言学、话语研究以及翻译研究。
