To deepen the reform of college English teaching and actively explore innovative approaches to collegeEnglish levelbased teaching reform in the new era, Faculty of SELC attended an online special lecture via Tencent Meeting on the evening of September 23, 2026. Lou Xinsheng, Director of the Public Foreign Language Teaching Department at Huanghe Science and Technology College, was invited to deliver a special report entitled “Exploration of CollegeEnglish LevelBased Teaching Reform Based on Smart Learning Tools”. Hosted by Zhang Bingjie from the IndustryEducation Integration Center, the lecture was attended by all faculty members of the School of English, who listened attentively to the presentation.

During the lecture, drawing on his yearslong practice in public foreignlanguage teaching administration and reform, Director Lou Xinsheng conducted an indepth analysis of prominent problems existing in current college English teaching. He systematically elaborated on the core connotation, reform significance and implementation logic of levelbased teaching. He pointed out that the core of collegeEnglish levelbased teaching lies in “teaching students in accordance with their aptitude and empowering learners at different levels”. By scientifically grouping students according to their English proficiency and learning competence, differentiated teaching objectives, content and assessment criteria can be formulated. This breaks the “onesizefitsall” teaching model, enabling students with weak foundations to make steady progress and highachieving students to achieve further advancement.

In the session dedicated to reform practice, Director Lou presented detailed implementation measures for levelbased college English teaching adopted at Huanghe Science and Technology College and demonstrated its systematic reform scheme in full scope. Supported by realworld teaching statistics and typical teaching cases, he analyzed the remarkable effects of levelbased teaching in stimulating students’ learning motivation, narrowing gaps in academic performance, improving CET4 and CET6 pass rates, and fostering students’ comprehensive practical competence in English. His sharing provided practical and replicable references for participating teachers.

Towards the end of the lecture, participating teachers raised active questions and engaged in indepth discussions on practical teaching issues such as criteria for streaming students, dynamic management mechanisms and bottlenecks in classroom instruction, creating a vibrant academic atmosphere.

Featuring substantial content and close relevance to realworld teaching, this online special lecture integrates theoretical insights with practical value. It has broadened participating English teachers’ horizons for teaching reform and clarified implementation pathways for collegeEnglishlevelbased teaching. Taking this lecture as an opportunity, the School of English will steadily advance the implementation of collegeEnglish levelbased teaching reform in response to the institutional transformation of the university. It will keep optimizing teaching modes and refining educational measures to fully promote the highquality development of public foreignlanguage teaching at the university.
