On the afternoon of March 22, 2023, the School of English Studies and the School of Translation Studies carried out a series of teaching activities of “Teaching Course from the Ideological and Political Perspective”, aiming at deepening the reform of teaching, constructing ideological and political elements with high quality, improving the teaching level of ideological and political elements and promoting the construction of “first-class majors”.
Prof. Zhang Yi, Vice Dean of the School of Foreign Studies of Northwestern Polytechnical University, Prof. Su Rui, Vice Dean of the School of Foreign Studies of Northwestern University, and Prof. Han Hongjian, Dean of the School of Foreign Studies of Xi’an University, were invited to be the critics. Prof. Yuan Xiaolu, Dean of the School of English Studies and the School of Translation Studies, Prof. Zhang Rui, Vice Dean of the School of Translation Studies, Prof. Li Xianhua, Vice Dean of the School of English Studies, as well as the deans of the departments of the two Schools and teachers, attended the event. The event was hosted by Li Yan, Vice Dean of School of English Studies.
In the demonstration class, Wang Xiaojuan and Luo Fei vividly demonstrated how to explore the elements of the ideology and politics of the curriculum and design them from the perspective of the teaching objectives, and also showed the teaching effect. The two teachers said that in teaching, teachers should pay attention to combining the concept of curriculum ideology and politics with the teaching goal. That is to say, when mining the elements of English curriculum ideology and politics, they should be organically integrated with the teaching content, rather than letting ideology and politics stay on the surface. Teachers can flexibly adopt inspirational and project-based teaching methods to guide students to enhance their ability to independently explore issues on the basis of knowledge mastery, and strive to focus on both improving the students’ basic language skills and nurturing ideology and politics unnoticeably.
Experts then commented on this activity. They pointed out that the demonstrations of the two teachers fully embodied the teaching concept of “Course on the Ideological and Political Dimension and the ideological and political course should be synergistic in cultivation programs”, and the integration of the elements from the ideological and political perspective into the course also sublimated the content of the teaching materials. The experts emphasized that teachers should dig deeper into the ideological and political elements in their professional courses, pay attention to the penetration of ideological and political elements in the teaching content and methods, and improve the effectiveness of the courses in educating people. Teachers in universities should also have a sense of mission to educate people, do a good job of leading values, and pay attention to the actual needs of students. Meanwhile, teachers should insist on taking education reform as an opportunity to transform curriculum resources and subject resources into nurturing resources and promote the deep integration of ideological and political elements in education. In addition, the experts made constructive suggestions on the deficiencies in the teaching demonstration.
After that, Yuan Xiaolu made a conclusion about this demonstration. He fully affirmed that organizing such an event was beneficial and he put forward the following five requirements to all teachers. He pointed out that, firstly, teachers should constantly strengthen the responsibility and sense of mission of fostering virtue through education, constantly explore the teaching methods from ideological and political perspectives, and constantly improve the education methods, so as to further play the leading role of the key reforms of ideological and political elements to drive the development of the School; secondly, teachers should deeply understand the importance and necessity of ideological and political elements during course, innovate the teaching methods, and effortlessly explore the high-quality resources of ideological and political elements during course, so as to continuously improve the construction of teaching ideology and politics; Third, teachers should adhere to the unity of teaching and educating, and can organically integrate elements of ideological and political education such as patriotism, social responsibility and humanistic spirit with the characteristics of professional courses, and guide students to organically integrate their professional knowledge with the establishment of the Four-Sphere Confidence, the core socialist values, and patriotism under the international changes, so as to realize the higher-order nature of the course educating people; Fifthly, teachers should take a high sense of responsibility and mission to promote the educational and teaching reform of the university, and take “Teaching Course from the Ideological and Political Perspective” as an opportunity to promote the construction of national first-class majors in our School.
This activity is not only a demonstration class of “Teaching Course from the Ideological and Political Perspective”, but also an exchange and discussion of its teaching methods, which not only builds a useful exchange platform for teachers but also improves their teaching ability and better promotes the “Teaching Course from the Ideological and Political Perspective”. This activity is important for better exerting the role of “Teaching Course from the Ideological and Political Perspective” in “to foster virtue and nurturing people through education”, promoting the teaching of ideology and politics, creating a “first-class curriculum”, and advancing the construction of national first-class majors. It is also important to promote the construction of national first-class majors.
